The Mars Perseverance rover is a nuclear powered mobility platform on Mars, the size of a large van, and packed with onboard instruments and devices to autonomously explore the surface of Mars. Moreover, Perseverance will perform the first step in a three-step mission to robotically return samples from Mars to Earth. It will sample, cache, and deploy on the surface of Mars, precious rock samples (drill bits) that will be collected by a future rover mission. Perseverance is also packed with autonomous capabilities, on-board intelligence and machine learning algorithms to allow it to accomplish it mission of looking in-situ for signatures of current or past life on Mars.
